My new album Life Tax is here! It’s my most pared down and gentle album to date I’d say. It was written and recorded in the Northcote Uniting Church Hall when I rented a room there in 2019.. and has taken two years to get it together so I can release it at a time that felt right.
This album will be released on the 4th March in shops but you can pre-order now. The benefits of this? Well there’s bundles that’ll only be available for the pre-order period. In these will be an exclusive t-shirt that I drew myself PLUS the latest edition of my zine ‘Cutting Remarks.’
All orders received by the 25th Feb will be posted out on that date so hopefully, Oz Post permitting, you’ll get it early. All pre-orders go in the running to win a special prize: an 8 track album of my songs chosen by one lucky winner, recorded acoustically and delivered to you in a one-off lathe cut LP pressing.
Had so much fun making this video. It was made in various iconic locations around Gympie QLD on Gubi Gubi country. Shot by local photographer and filmmaker Leeroy Todd. I’d originally planned on making something down in Melbourne with my album band but the border situation made that seem unlikely. I kept running into Leeroy at my office (local cafe) and always chatting about film we decided to just go out and just film something on the fly. It’s the way I like to do clips, no crew, no fuss.
I recruited my two Godchildren Billy and Ivy (and a 1957 Peugeot 403 that you might recognise from a classic Oz movie) and we just spent a day going to locations around Gympie that had some meaning for me. They’re both creative kids so I let them choose their own outfits and actions in each scene.
This song Lapsed Catholic is the first track released from my upcoming album LIFE TAX out on the 4th March 2022.

2021 QLD XMAS TOUR
Another short ramble among a few community halls in my native QLD but this time bringing an amazing cast. Uncle Herb Wharton is an 85 yr old former Aboriginal stockman who became a celebrated writer and poet, his work draws heavily on his experiences and I’ve been a big fan for years. He’s coming along to read a story each night about his memories of Christmas in the remote outback. And then after bonding with a certain emcee in Muckadilla so I thought I’d drag him along too to keep the night running smoothly. If you’ve ever been wanting a slice of Muckadilla in your life you’re about to get it! Plus he’s driving the whole tour in his hearse. Thanks to Arts Queensland for making this happen. Don’t forget Claire Anne Taylor is making the trip from Tassie as well.

DOUBLE J – ARTIST IN RESIDENCE
Very happy that Double J have let me at the controls for the whole month of November as the Artist in Residence. I’ll join you every week from the kitchen of my childhood home in Gympie to play the music that’s made me who I am. From musical postcards stuck to the fridge of my life, to artists I’ve met over years of touring all over the place, songs that deal with the anxieties of life, and music that’s inspired literature. You can tune in every Sunday from 3-5pm, but it’ll be also streamable through the Double J website for a few weeks after that. Episodes are found HERE as they happen.
Thanks to everyone who tuned in to the show at Pomona! It’s still available to watch at your leisure for the next two weeks over the xmas period.
I have finally worked out this streaming situation. I’m sad I can’t reach you all this year so this seems like the only other option. It’ll be beamed out to you from the Majestic Theatre in Pomona on Saturday 19th Dec at 7pm, it’s a place that’s very special to me. And it’ll actually be live! No chance to edit out lyric lapses and broken strings. And there’ll be a chance for you to request songs (or heckle) from the comfort of your lounge rooms.
This means you’ll be able to watch it at 5pm in WA, 8am in the UK, 11am in Estonia… and that covers all my major markets. Sadly in the US it’ll be the wee hours of the morning, you’d have to be keen to actually watch it live. So for that reason, and anyone else who has plans that night, you’ll be able to stream it anytime for up to two weeks after the fact.
Shelley Short will sing some songs too, and there’s the possibility of other guests. Truly hope you’re able to dial us into your Xmas period!
Individual tickets are $20, with a $30 option if you feel like chipping in for the whole family. Once tickets are purchased you’ll be emailed instructions and an exclusive code which will give you access on the day.
