On the strength of her performance at Womadelaide earlier this year Kankawa Nagarra was invited to perform at the mothership festival in the UK. We were both nervous about it given the crazy stuff going on in the world, and also could we even afford it with all the travel costs going through the roof? I knew I had to book more shows to make it worth dragging an 80yr old halfway across the world. I reached out to a few people over there, booking agents and such, and they all said forget it, it’s too late to organise anything, you’re a year too late. Apparently the whole country is either away or outdoors during July/Aug. Faced with such obstinate negativity I tend to double down. So over the past month I’ve burnt the midnight oil (UK business hours) calling venues directly and convincing them it’s a good idea to let us play. I’m happy to say they’ve all been really helpful and are super excited. So please tell friends, colleagues, second cousins and the ghosts of convict ancestors that we’re coming. We’re gonna need all the help we can get.
Best of all Kankawa is so excited to be going. This is the first time she’s played her original music outside of Australia. She just called me tonight saying that her doctor visited her very remote community to make sure she’s ok to travel and gave her a big thumbs up. We both can’t wait!
