Hi Darren, I just received the email with your US tour dates including the proposed/possible run including Kanasas and the Dakotas etc.
You should come to Minneapolis/Saint Paul too, since I can't make it to either of the Dakotas for your shows (if you end up playing there). Now that winter is over (sort of) Minneapolis is pretty fun.

Hi Darren,
DVDs arrived safely in the UK today. I thoroughly enjoyed the 'making of' documentary, it's great fun to watch and listen to Eli tell his stories of Marilyn and Sinatra etc, you all looked to be having such a good time.
I hope you have a great, maybe you can make it back to England sometime too. Cheers, Neil

Dear Darren
I ran into Mary at Winston House yesterday morning. We were both there visiting our mothers. While I was telling her that I'd given one of your CDs to my step-daughter Amy Neilson (another old St Pat's student) for Christmas she told me that you had met Eli Wallach in New York and had made a film with him. Will it be on your merchant listing at any stage?
Happy New Year

Would you believe you actually have some fans in Gympie? My mate Jules and I are great admirers of yours and are currently absolutely butchering my favourite DH song "Elbows" as we are really crap but enthusiatic guitarists.

I hope to get to your Brissy show but if you want to play in your home town you are guaranteed an audience of at least 2 and I am sure we can bring along plenty more for you.

it was nice meeting you last week with gary and mark at the bar in my neighborhood on a freezing night. i had a hangover the next day. nice seeing you play as well - i got a cd.
i asked swedish person who grew up in stockholm about the christmas tradition you mentioned of tossing metal into a fire and then into water to predict your next year's future. he said they didn't do that in stockholm! but his dad is german so maybe he's not as deeply connected to nordic rituals as he should be?
hey i'm going to new zealand in 2 and a half weeks for 3 and a half weeks. if you're there (but why should you be there?) i'll see you.

No offence to Pikelet, but you two always create something amazing on stage together that's been lacking over the last few shows. Hi Darren,
An obscure reference to "Crossword girl" and a request. Visiting my 89y.o. crossword and scrabbleaholic Nana in Bundaberg this week and she found ... "something that's rare". However, instead of an "8 letter word on a triple word score", she got an 8 letter word on TWO triple word scores for a total turn score of 212! She was jumping out of her skin with glee (even more so after 2 more 7-letter words, total personal score of 539!). From time to time I sing her a bit of "crossword girl" and she loves it! Now for my bold request ... at the Brissy gig with the Lucksmiths, can you please sing it with "... an 8 letter word on TWO triple word scores"?
Cheers, cant wait for the gig!

Hi Darren,

I've been keeping something bottled up for almost 6 months now and I have to let it out, because it's eating me up from the inside and I'm becoming a shell of the man I once was.

Remember at Falls when you said somebody once introduced you as Darrell Hanlon, then the whole of the tent erupted in a highly enthusiastic rendition of 'Daaaaaarrrrrelll, Daaaaarrrrrellll', ala the infamous, but much loved, Darrell Strawberry chant from The Simpsons?

I was the one who started that chant.

So:

I'm sorry that you had to stop playing for over 5 minutes while it died down.

I'm sorry that you appeared to be mortified beyond belief and perhaps less than amused.

I'm sorry that I tried to do it again when you played at The Thornbury Theatre in April.

And, most of all, I'm sorry that I kept this horrible secret from you for so long.

I feel better now, I hope you can forgive me.

VERY much looking forward to Pointing Ray Guns at Pagans, but as i posted a few months ago, i'm *desperate* to get my mitts on an electronic version of Butterfly Bones. I have only heard it once (live in Brisbane at the xmas show last year) because my vinyl player has a blunt stylus and i don't want to damage the 7" - but from that one listen i LOVED it and am dying to hear it again. Oh well, i guess i'll just have to wait and hear it live on April 11th. Or buy a new stylus/turntable...

Mr Hanlon,
It was a pleasure to see your xmas show in Brisbane the other night - i happened to be in town that week and stayed an extra night just to see your show, it was WELL worth it!

I purchased two copies of your new 7" - one for myself and one for my friend for xmas. She loves you so much she named her second child Eli :)

I was wondering whether it would be possible to get an mp3 version of Butterfly Bones. I would dearly love to add it to a compilation CD i'm making for a friend, but alas i cannot convert it from vinyl to digital format.

I must admit Butterfly Bones has jumped into my favourite songs of yours. Right up there with Falling Aeroplanes and I Wish That I Was Beautful For You.

Once again, spectacular show at the Old Museum, and can't wait to see you in Adelaide in March =D

Dear Mr Hanlon,

I was in your audience last night (Brunswick) enjoying the tunes and soaking up the Christmassy cheer but I feel honour bound to apologise for forgetting the words to Yellow Submarine; a song from my all time favourite animation!

I am heartfelt-wise wishing I could be there at St Stephens as that is my 'ol hood (lived on Church St) and I have eaten Shakespeare's pies in that very cemetery and have heard one or two choirs there in my time.

Really I guess I wanted to thank you for a great night. I had a persistant, little flu and for a few hours I forgot my clamminess and dry cough amongst banter, melodies and a happy crowd.

Keep the aspidistra flying,

mira

just want to point the uncanny sameness in our names its not a common name so when a past work friend had thought that i was playing a solo gig you were mentioned to me. i also play in a band i play drums.
although my name is spelt a little different
(Darran) but for most of my life the majority of people have spelt my name as Darren.
i am only aware i think of only one other darren hanlon in my area so your name was of some interest to me. its just strange every time i here of you its like someone is talking about me. Anyway blabbed enough,, cheers.

Hi Darren, I hope your globe-trotting adventures went well this year. Just missed you by a couple days in Lorensbergsteatern, Gothenburg in June so it's great to see you doing some shows back in the homeland. I'll see you at the Old Museum mate. Take care.
p.s. great choice of venue!

Hey Daz,
I was writing crossly when my iPod suddenly pulled your voice out of its mysterious inner workings, and I had a wave of happy and calm descend. Then I realised, it has been *years* since I saw you last. Not sure if you're around much these days, but wanted you to know that of all the STUCCO set, you're the one I most miss talking to. But you still make me grin, even through headphones ...
Cheers ears, and all the best,

Two brilliant (small) gigs at the EOTR on 14th sept, Darren. It was also great to have met you, albeit briefly, after The Bimble Inn gig. I was the one who mentioned I first heard your music on the 'Write Your Adventures Down CD and that I was going to see Robert Forster soon. Shame you couldn't have supported him (and Glenn and Adele).
Hope to see you next time you are over''.and maybe EOTR year !!

P.S. I could tell you were wondering what 'Roast Peacock' would taste like'..;=)

Dear Darren,
I was recently enjoying the song A to Z, when it occurred to me that Yellow Submarine comes before Yesterday in the alphabet. Please amend and re-release the song ASAP. Could you please notify me when this happens as I would wish to purchase a new copy of Little Chills without this glaring error.
Thanks,
Love Bri

P.S. please disregard this email if this lyric was intentionally alluding to the fact that we should forget about the past (yesterday). nice songwriting.

You are awe-inspiring. I used to see your mum fairly regularly. But its been a long time since I visited that town. I have thought about you often in my life journey, with my children and around the world. You are true and honest. It wasnt until recently when I happened across Tracey on Facebook, that we started emailling and she told me that she had seen one of your shows. She said you were brilliant, which we already knew. I too Google you and here I am. I have asked a friend back home on the coast to shoot me out a few CD's. My son, Jake, who is an avid guitarist will love them. I cant wait to see you live myself. I have 2 teenage boys who will be dying to come along. I have sent links to your website to everyone I have contacts with, we would love to see you bigger than "Ben" so to speak. I have read your site top to toe. You are an inspiration to all.

Darren have thought about soundtracking movies mate?

Like the Melb guy David Hirshfelder and Jonny Greenwood , who did a wonderous job on "There Will Be Blood"

Another hilarious turn would be to write new music for Flight of the Conchords...now that would something. Surely they need a song at least for each episode.

Themes could include bus stop romances, fairground attractions and dog park frolics. The lyrical world is your sticky little oyster.

But seriously now..

I first heard of you when I met your sister who was living with a friend of mine in a sharehouse in Carlton.
Since coming across your first album at Coburg Library, I have cherished your music and I enjoy playing your songs myself.
I have made a few YouTube videos of myself covering your songs. The first two are primitively made, as they were my first goes at making and uploading a video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lW0uxCyDhIw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kX8uFUXQR9Q
but my latest cover of your songs is my 25th video:

Dazz -saw you in surrogate Canberra town recently & brought along friends who were new to & touched by your music. Great night despite the ANU Bar acoustics (dunno if you remember but I was the one who snuck out in an attempt to turn THOSE fridges off, got busted). Been seeing you a long time from the Simpletons days, the Candle cameo appearances in Fitzroy, Empress gigs with Couchy on stage playing waterglasses & now everyone sings along to a song that you wrote by yourself one evening. You've come a long way, no doubt because your music talks to a whole lot of different people. My girl is studying in N. Korea, where the heat gets shut off at night along with the electricity -and without any cars on the road, voices seem louder. So those lines mean a lot to us. Especially when I come home to my empty house after big nights and it calms me. I play ukulele and will cut to the chase - what tuning to you use & can you get me started? Nearly worked it out but 3 different ways! Merry Xmas.

I read with fear your news that you may not tour again for a bit. I have never seen you live and read the accounts written here with envy. Is there the least chance you could do a show in nothern England at some time in the future, say, somewhere between Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle? There's a little city called York that's right in the middle of these three. Maybe you could play there? I reckon I could coerce enough people to make it worth your while.

Go on.

in the seven years that i owned rubys in melbourne, i saw more than 2000 gigs, and your last was not only the finest, but had the most enviable status of being the only time the pacman machine could be heard over the band. Which was ironic because it was your keyboard player giving it a go. I went to turn it off but he was half way through a game : then i called him a 'bad man' jokingly. He later came up and said he wasn't a bad man, and looked really sad - i still think about this and feel a bit cruel. So could you tell him i really was only joking : the whole scenario was beautiful.
ps - admittedly there was 5 free credits on the machine, and you know how that feels. - pps. thanks.

Hi Darren,

I left the Gympie Civic Centre on such a natural high last Sunday...after hearing you perform live again.

Seeing such original performers like yourself is a really inspiring thing, coming from such a small town. Makes me want to pick up my guitar again.

Your new song that goes, along the lines of, "and those things will follow you" was a truly touching line - that is still stuck in my head.

Look forward to hearing more musical stories.

Thanks again.

Christine

Thank you for our efforts in putting on a show at Uralla on Friday night. Mate, it was an unforgettale experience for myself and my partner . I've been following you since the days of the Simpletons and I never would have thought that i'd get the chance to enjoy one of your shows at the bloody top pub Uralla!!

We really appreciated you soldiering on despite your oviously failing voice. We reckon you should call your new song Rowlf after that ukelele superstar Rowlf the dog from the muppets. Either that or Wally.

Thanks again for a great show. What chance of you performing at Blues and roots next year? Oh, and Pikelet was absolutely captivating as well, both on her own and belting it out alongside you.

Thanks for a great show in Canberra on Tuesday night. It was weird being at a Darren Hanlon gig that wasn't at Tilley's! The Mr T rap was great and I loved hearing the songs I hadn't heard before live.

Another word that rhymes with Frolich, Colic (although that could border on insulting, Elli Wallach could end up an alcholic with Colic who frolichs!) He may not be so proud of having a song written about him then! Good luck for the rest of the tour and I am really looking forward to your Chrissie gigs and the rumoured new album next year.

Cheers from Canberra,

Linda

Hey Darren et al. Awesome show last night @ ANU (first time punter, long time listener). Your Mr T rap was as hilarious as it was surprising (yes, I was in character!) Cory's "multi-tasking" was great & Pikelet's....well...she's cute! (not to mention talented with the piano accordian, which impresses me to no end). Apart from your new cuss word of "frollic" I thought of a couple more "Walloch" words in the car on the way home....Anabolic/Alcoholic/Tulloch (wines), there appears to be a theme to those, however, I'm sure there's tens more. Was great to hear you never tire of Falling Aeroplanes...personally, neither do I. Hope the rest of your road trip is awesome, esp Gympie. Was great to spend the last night of not knowing you (in a non-creepy way). Punk's not dead!!!

Hey Darren,

That Chicago show was great. Thanks for letting me take those videos of a couple of your songs. Now I can make millions on the internet!!!

I went on that Chicago Architecture tour today, when it was sunny. I decided not to go in the rain, turns out that was a good decision, seeing as though the boat has an open deck. The tour was pretty cool, maybe something for next time you go to Chicago.

Hope you got to play the pinnies!

I love the songs and videos (seen on youtube) by Darren Hanlon and company. Happiness is a Chemical and Unmade Bed are so moving...esp. the latter as it represents social isolation so well. I had tears in my eyes...painful, sad and true. Besides all that, the music is really good. :)

Hello Darren! We saw you again at Tilley's. Ahhhh Tilley's. We were the slightly (ok slightly more than slightly) pissed people who harassed you at the end and had photos with you. We have some great photos by the way, so thanks for being a good sport (tolerant).

The first time I'd ever heard your music was the last time you were at Tilley's. You wrote "first time listener" on my CD. I thought that was pretty cool.

Anyway, I just wanted to say keep doing what you're doing and keep coming back to Tilley's.

Your music means a lot to us.

PS - Bree, if you're reading this, I'm sorry I harassed you too. I think you're great. The photos of me and you are funny too. I look excited. Your expression is a cross between bemused and disgusted. I want you to know that I shunned the opportunity for pictures with Holly and Sarah to have one with you. I will never regret that decision.
PPS - Darren, my housemate Kristy still wants a song written about her.

Stay well guys.

Thanks for a great show at Tilley's on Saturday night. Talking with friends before the show, I was asked what songs I particularly wanted to hear - "Unmade Bed" and "Squash" was my instant reply. Further along, the conversation turned to other concerts we would like to go to - Sarah Blasko was the unanimous response. How awesome it was, then, that they all come together!

Happy Birfday-tide etc.

Yummy gig last night! Even the weird guy from Dead Poet's Society who knew the words to every one of your songs who I foolishly made eye-contact with as I sang along to a couple and who then proceeded to do Kenny Everitt hands in my direction intersperced with tapping and prodding me on the back, arm and forehead for the duration. I fear you have many weird guy fans who leave MySpace only to see you in real space.

Not sure about soy milk and earl grey, but general respect for your references to soy and tofu as we all know they are a better alernative to eating animal stuff if we want the planet to be sexy. Then maybe we will win the "best planet" competition.

I think you should have a listen to Nizlopi, lovely boys from the UK. especially (we could make love) Extraordinary.

I had heard your name, I almost worked at The Globe (Brisbane) the night you played there and now that I am totally mesmerised by "Elbows" I am going to have to get all your albums and take a crash course in your amazing music and words.
"Elbows" has touched me like no song has for a long long time. I even love what you said about the writing of the song, lonely, boozed up and a victim of circumstances. Isn't that always the way......
Take care and be aware that next time you are in Brisvegas I won't just be thinking vaguely that I must go and hear that guy play.
Thanks for the music.

Thanks for the bonus live Seattle cd included with Elbows. If you've made it over here once perhaps you could do it again some time soon, and this time come to Nashville. Otherwise it will be mid 2008 before I return to live in Adelaide and get a chance to see you live (assuming you can drag yourself away from the Eastern seaboard)

Wow Darren. Your track 'Elbows' captures so much, yet such a little thing. I can really relate. A brief touch of someone that means something to you, or you wish you meant something to them, and it is a massive thing. But to others that little touch is just nothing, insignificant. I love how you make the slightest thing into a meaningful song. Thanks..

Darren,
I have only just found your song. I heard it on RRR breakfast and it shone out like a diamond in a gangsters tooth. Anyhow, I'd managed to stream it a couple of times on your site, and I was wondering why I hadn't heard it more, when to my joy it came up on Rage. I was completely happy and filled with anticipation in respect of the coming of the explosion that is the horn arrangement. Don't get me wrong, it's a great song which gives the horn part it's glory. So just as the first tingles are running up my neck, the camera backs out to the street for a cowboy and the horns cannot be heard and I felt instantly violated. I suppose it is the only bit of the song which has no vocals which, one's camera musn't roam, during the singing of. I just tried logging on to your site for another listen but that too appears to be part of the conspiracy to stop me hearing it holus bolus. I guess I will have to buy the record. Geronimo

Here in the hills, live gigs for me are few and far between - I saw the Majestic on Rage and then caught your Elbow words and marvelled at what one misses. Hope you'll be back to headline here when the old girl has recovered from her facelift.

Your refreshing songsmithing is well worth collecting. Nil bastardi carborundum!

nice meeting you at laneway festival. really unexpected but yeah. hope to see you at the great escape. happiness is a chemical was a friggin awesome video which was in my head for the last 3 months. 'i wish that i was beautiful...' is so sweet. you should have done a music video for 'punk's not dead'. that would be tops.
what record label are you on now that candle records has disbanded? or are you going your own way?

Hi darren,
just got the new elbows single the other day which is great and i recommend everyone buy it while you still can (sure to soon be a collectors item like the video store 7")! I had a bit of a problem getting the cd rom track to play properly - the visual seems to work but no audio? I don't know if anyone else has found this or if it is my lack of computer skills at fault, but i just thought i'd let you know. Keep up the good work and next time you have a gig in Tas I recommend Brookfield Winery in Margate, it is way better acoustics and atmosphere than the republic.
cheers,
rach
p.s. i've got some photos somewhere of the result of that infamous flaming cocktail incident at the republic a few years ago - if you want to add it to your photo gallery let me know and i'll send it.

Hello Darren,

Well I saw you play in Launceston, Tas back in about November '06, The Royal Oak. Anyway now living in Stavanger Norway and I have a coaster here signed by yourself quoting that "I hereby swear Darren Hanlon that I will play in Stavanger Norway in 2008 and Joel and Ryan will be on the door list. Signed: Darren Hanlon" not sure if you remember that? Well there is a distinct lack of Aussie music over here so it's time to cash in the voucher. When does the Scando tour start? skol (cheers) Ryan

Hello Darren, this is a really random contact but I saw you play a gig in sheffield years ago, and was having a discussion to my friends band 'coin-op' from brighton about how good 'hello stranger' was, when they were staying over during a tour, it seems you know the drummer matt quite well ! I'm a singer songwriter and I taught Nick the singer some guitar chords at college and have been mates with him ever since. If you're over this way again this next year or so,would be good to hear from you if you can, maybe offer myself as a support for any gigs in the north of england, hope the new year brings good luck, I've just become a daddy and am busy getting my web site up and running. Random I know, but say hi to matt if you are still in touch. regards.

Heard "Elbows" on triple J on thursday am. Heard a few lines and said to my daughter Oh, great! I love this song, turn it up! as if I had heard it before. It was one of those "love at first hearing" moments. Then I had to find out who sang it.Asked youngest daughter who has encyclopedic knowledge of all things musical. I'm in the process of uploading some old Playground/Simpletons footage onto youtube. I've put your name as one of the search tags, I hope you don't mind. I spoke to Cheersy last week to let him know, emailed Chris, still to get in touch with Steve through his bands my space page. It's the original band comp heat, some stuff from the recording of Smother and some old NRTV & NBN news interviews.

If you are still thinking of putting together a Simpletons tribute album let me know, I'd like to put up some cash to help with the recording and production costs

Take Care

I always really enjoy your stories (which happen to have music going as well) as you well know. Next time, I give you permission to send a small electric current through your guitar into any annoying 'dancers' who distract from your performance. Girl, if you read this - you're a crap dancer.
You told me of a place to go to in London next year to gather some inspiration for song writing. I can't remember where it was. Would you let me know if you get the chance? Keep keeping it real Daz and I think that you'd make a great primary school teacher. Sarah x

Dear Darren (alliteration an awkward co-incidence..)

Thank you so very much for your show last night at the Corner hotel here in Melbourne. This was my first encounter with your music live and it was an absolute joy. I was particulary touched by your easy banter with the crowd and gentle tales of Op Shops, Nans and 'Kitten Power'. Highlight of the night, the entire crowd (well at least it sounded that way) singing along with you to 'Falling Aeroplanes'. Thanks for the Music and the Words. TrenT

Hey Mr Hanlon

To appropriate from an ABBA song..."Thank you for the music, the songs [you're] singing. Thanks for all the joy they're bringing"...god Abba was so cheesy. Saw you at the Metro last Saturday and again it was a brilliant show. We managed to find ourselves up front stage left (maybe right for you?) as the rest of the crowd formed a mosh pit around the centre to be nearer you'the plus side a good view, the negative'well none really. Anyway it at least allowed me to think you may have been coming over to sing Manilla NSW directly to me'lets just disregard the fact the Mr Gray and his keyboards were on this side of the stage. So the point of this long and tedious diatribe is that I hung around after the show to talk to you but after an attack of 'the shys' I have resorted to this guestbook (which I am sure you don't read) to say'Thanks and please don't give up your day job!

I saw your music video this morning as I was flippin through the channels. The images really stopped me in my tracks there for a minute. As a matter of interest, did they use actual reversal stock film to achieve that vintage, desaturated look, or post-production FX wizardry? Looks briliant either way. Gallo's Buffalo 66 has the same retro look . Also another brilliant piece of beauty is the film Gothic by Ken Russell. A strange tale set in Lord Byron's Swiss chalet over a weekend when he invites Percy Blythe Shelley and his wife Mary and she dreams up Frankenstein. Shot very imaginatively. Best of Luck - nik

Hi there Darren
Your Brisbane gig at The Globe last night was awesome! Loved every second (especially Ring of Fire!!) And alothough sillioquy may may not be technically correct in She Cuts Hair I've always liked the fact that you used it . You may not have been physically alone but it's still like you were talking to no one. Which makes it correct on different level. Though you probably just used it because it rhymed!!

I've been listening to your music since Early Days and even so I was surprised by Hold On. It is amazing, beautiful, perfect. I've seen you live from London to Newtown, the @newtown gig was the best thing I've been to this year, and I'm looking forward to the Metro gig. See you there.

G'day Darren!

big cheers to you for writing a song about Manilla! It's the town next to my hometown of Barraba... about half an hour away.

I got a bit shocked when Dave from the Camels told me a couple of months ago that you'd been in the audience of the show that they played at Manilla! My band was one of the support acts. Such a strange thing to be told an indie songwriting icon was in the audience of the show... especially because said show was in Manilla! wtf?

anyway, i live in sydney now. i miss small-town-ness occasionally but after 18 years of living in Barraba (population 1500) sydney is exciting.

anyway. loving the new stuff, loved the old stuff, i just wanted to acknowledge the Camels connection, haha.

peace
simon

Just wanted to say thank you for continuing to prove that it is possible for creative and left-of-the-centre (in a good way ... the centre is not a happy place) people to do different and wonderful things in the brilliant but no-nonsense world of commercial music marketing. I love the new album; am listening to it every morning on the ipod on the way to work and am arriving at the office every day with a smile on my face and a 'I could almost do anything!' feeling ... Thank you! Love your style, evolving and morphing with each release so far, but always so Darren Hanlon ... and have visited your site for the first time today - absolutely cute and sumptuous! If only I could get my room to look like your homepage, I would be happy ...

Darren Hanlon - a lyrical and musical master! I am a fan.

I must admit three years ago I confused your music with Elliott Smith, now I know the difference. oRing of Fireo@Newtown in April 2006 was a stand out for me.

I just saw your latest film clip on You Tube -quirky and cool. I havenot seen any other flip clips of yours, can you please add these to YouTube also?

Please come and tour Sweden, and one day in Australia you can play at my wedding...

Hey Darren,
Congratulations on Fingertips man. It's a sensation, as expected. Can't wait to catch you at the Metro on Nov 4. I work with a few people who are musically "talented" and I keep asking them if they've listened to Darren Hanlon....the guy's a lyrical genius. I plan to burn them a selection of tracks, and Elbow will be one of them....how fuckin brilliant is that song???? I recall you finished your set @Newtown with it and ever since I've been waiting for the new album to come out to hear it again. I shake my head at how brilliant it is. Best wishes mate, hope the album sells zillions...it deserves to for sure.

Hello All

My new Darren Hanlon CD arrived yesterday. It is so fantastic. I got the bonus disc version. How good is the bonus disc? I am loving it. I haven't heard some of the songs of Hello Stranger for a while because my big sis stole my CD!

On the new CD my fave track so far is Elbows. What an amazing song!

Go Darren!

Hello Dazza! You won't remember me, Nancy and I are the friends of Curt'n'Molly in Portland with the mysteriously rising table. I'm sorry we never got that drink in Melbourne last February either. But I've got the new album and it's WONDERFUL and so are you. I don't know if any of the yelps you heard from the third balcony at the Moore were me, but they might have been. We were a long, long ways away, almost straight up, looking down on the top of your head practically. It was a terrific show, and it's even more terrific to hear it again. But those new songs -- whew, they sound like aces.

I recently had occasion to sing your song "I Wish That I Was Beautiful For You" while wearing ladies' clothing and balancing on a Bongo Board in front of a small crowd of people, and it was a lot of fun. It's probably for the best that you'll never hear it! That song makes me weep salt tears when you sing it, especially the version on the DVD.

Come back to the Pacific Northwest!

Hi! Other than the info on my profile (I'm Estonian etc.) I have one thing to say about myself.
I don't mean to sound like a crazy fangirl in need of a restraining order... BUT (and there is always a but) if it was possible I would marry that man's songs and have their puppies.
Sometimes parts of them make sense only in their own universe, and that just happens to coincide with the one I'm in most of the time, my own universe, that is.
A friend recently asked who would get this excited about a kickstand or squash, but hey! if Daz hadn't who else would help the world notice and appreciate the wonderful things some folks take for granted?
Anyway. A wee intro it is, and I'm glad to be here.

Hi Darren,

This is the first time I've ever used one of these things, so don't even know if you read them or not....

I was at your recent Hobart gig and just wanted to tell you (and whoever else reads this), how beautiful it was!! (Despite having possibly the worst sound guy/ mixing desk ever? I think my ears actually bled due to some spectacular feedback during Paddy's set!)

Anyhoo,... You made me smile so much my face started having little spasms! Which is kinda embarrassing, but absolutely worth it, to feel so magnificently happy!

I love that I loved the new songs you played as much as the ones I already knew, and can't wait for the new album to come out.

Thank you for being wonderful beyond words!

Im a huge fan of Darrens and have been for a while.

The last concert i went to at the HI FI in melbourne was so awesome that I just had to stick around and get a piccy with him! As much as felt like a total FRIGGGEN GROUPIE and moron after it, i still think the piccy is great and Darren was quite concerned about how his smile looked. eg: When my mate took the piccy Darren instantly asked 'hows my smile'.

It was the highlight of my otherwise uneventful life but i dont think i'll ever do something like it again...i felt like a complete twit even though i got to meet him! hahahahah

i live in melbourne and im not a freak.. really im not...

I was driving along and heard your live concert on Triple j. I had to pull over and listen to every song. I missed your name and had to search on the internet for your song lyrics. It took some time - and found you. Ran to the record store in Glebe, found Little Chills and haven't taken it out of the CD player in a week. I have to listen to it every day.

Another internet search - OH, you were in TheSimpletons.! Riiiight! I knew Brad Cheers in Lismore we worked together at NPWS - oh I'm feeling a connection coming on....

Gotta get your other recordings. WHERE? (apart from the internet - my mastercard hurts)

I have a band and we would love to cover one of your songs - just live, not recording it. Can we have your blessing?
Check us out if you like: www.mp3.com.au/letterbox

You're beautiful!

To me Darren Hanlon is like that cousin who you don't see that often, but always have a great time with.
Daz's latest Adelaide show was a blast.
He played through the favourites off Early Days and Little Chills plus a couple of newies. He had a great keyboard & trumpet accompaniment as well . Highlight for me was Squash in the encore, although I was hanging out for it.
He commented on that throughout the night. Stuff along the lines of everyone being so quiet and concentrating on the music...
His banter and commentary was ace. Continued to draw everyone in and got lots of chuckles and grins. I saw him a few years back at a show with Augie March, and it's good to see his down-to-earthed-ness and blokey charisma has continued to develop.
To top it off, after he played A to Z someone proposed
which got plenty of Awwws from the audience.
Warm and fuzzies... yeah

Darren said it was the final show of the tour. So glad he and Corey and Bree could make it. What a great night. My second DH show and I loved it. I even rated a mention. I took my mum tonight (who thinks he's a lovely young man.. he he) and I told him before the show my mum would love to hear Don't Want To Pay. He looked aghast and said he never plays it but he mentioned 'Helen's Mum' in the encore and played it for her. I think my mum was stoked.

He still didn't play Service Station or Record Store but he did play The Last Night of Not Knowing You so i was very happy.

His cover of Ring of Fire was both hilarious and wonderful.

Great show Darren. Thanks.

Hi, I was at the show in Austin recently. I was in the second row maybe in the middle. I really enjoyed your set and i'm going to go look for your stuff at Virin Records in Chicago tomorrow. I don't know if Darren actually reads these posts, but i'm going to speak as if you are reading it. OK, now I hope I find them there. I've been listening to punk's not dead and hiccups mp3'd I downloaded (if you dont mind?) for the past few days and I haven't gotten tired of them at all. I know I should have bought your stuff while I was at the show, but I was kind of low on money and I had already spent quite a bit on the magnetic fields. I know how hard it is to sell records when you're an opening act. My band has never really been the headliner and we never sell much. IN conclusion I was really happy with your set. You wplayed really well. You write the kind of songs I try to write, which is perhaps why I enjoyed it so much. Do you like Jonathan Richman? Anyway, good show.

i never saw them live unfortunately. Grant was scheduled to play my friend's Ziggy Stardust tribute in Brisbane but had to pull out at the last moment due to illness. They seemed to hit a later career peak with the recent two or three albums and thus making them one of the nation's most enduring bands.

Hey Darren,
Heard you on the tribute to Grant McLennan on JJJ today. The Go-Betweens are my all time fav. band and I just loved Grant's songwriting. It was interesting to hear you talk about him and his songwriting. His death last week made me very upset, what a loss! My favourite gig of theirs was at the Clerendon. there were only about 8 people there so they asked all our names and Grant dedicated songs to everyone. I loved watching them perform and had seen them many times over the years.

No he didn't play it in Canberra last year because I asked him after the show why he didn't play it and he said he never does.

Tonight I requested it BEFORE the show and he said he hardly ever plays it - has played it maybe twice. He said Corey didn't know it and that it was the song that some people really hated.

Who could hate this song? I think it's perfect. One day he'll play it, I'm sure, and I'll be very, very happy (hint hint, Darren...if you're reading this...). If the band doesn't know it, play it solo!

Service Station is also one of my favourites, a great traveling song for long trips up the coast. Perhaps he played it when he was supporting the femmes a while back. He is on tour around Australia at the moment and has got some new stuff from the album he will be recording later on in the year. I've seen him three times since December and I'll liking the new stuff.

Has that changed at all? I'd love to hear it this time. it's my favourite on LC. When i said that, he seemed really surprised. Is it anyone else's favourite?

Does it exist and can it be obtained from anywhere?

Hi Josh,

I don't recognise the lyric so I am guessing that it might be from one of the four new songs that he opened the show with. It's also not from the Christmas EP as far as I recall.

So in terms of hearing the song again.....probably the best bet is on the follow up album to Little Chills. Otherwise, we may get to hear it again at the Candle Concert on Feb 24.

Cheers,
Adam

Last feb we used your song heart vs mind from early days ep in our wedding- it was very appropriate. So a new claim to fame!

It's been years since I've heard a Triple J compilation but if they're anything like the old days, then I'm figuring that Darren's songs (especially "I Wish...") would be a bit uncharacteristic in sound compared to some of the other selections. But his songs are still making the compilations and that is a testament (I think) to really great songwriting.

I got to hear about Darren when triple J included Punk's not dead on it's hottest 100. I rediscovered him all over again when, home to Sydney from London for a visit, I heard "I wish that I was..." on triple J while driving across the harbour bridge. I loved it. I went on to buy his album and fell in love with it also.

Please visit London, I couldn't bear not having the chance to see you in concert! Keep on trucking!

Hello to all and good day to some, I justwanted to share my discovery of Darren Hanlon. Yesterday I was searching around this website called Pandora which is a music discovery search engine which was created by a group of musicians and techs called the music genome project. Anyhow, the site is good times to be had so check it out. His name popped up and..
All that is not the point, but maybe the point is that the song Ends of the City is an amazingly beautiful creation which inspires tears every time I hear it. Most certainly I get lost in the melodic inflection that touches the part of me that separates me from what is found in the meaning of the day to day.
Music means so much to me and I just wanted to express my appreciation for such a remarkable song. I don't understand how someone can write a piece of music that makes such a connection to someone they have never met, seen, known. Well that is the beauty of the whole thing, i guess we all fill in the endings.

Sounds good, killinit. Do you know whether it will be an exclusive Darren Hanlon CD or a wider Candle compilation? I have been collecting random bsides and other bits and pieces and I would say that Darren has almost a full CD of very high quality material. I just picked up the Hiccups EP and I love those b-sides. Another exceptional song is 'Two Days in a Foreign City' which deserves a place on an album somwhere.

Hi

I really wanted to get my hands on a copy of the single "Perfect Day" (The b side to "I wish that I was beautiful for you".)

I ordered a copy online at Candle Records but a few days later received an email saying they had sold out. Sad

Is the song available elsewhere or to purchase as an MP3?

Any help would be appreciated.

To Darren - and any passers-by in Oxford. Just following up on our conversation Monday night at The Metro (Gympie girl, photocopier in her bag). Catweazle has moved to the East Oxford Community Centre cnr of Cowley Rd and Princes St on Thursday nights now. While it is '3 to perform, it usually attracts a good crowd and quite diverse musical talents - just might be a place to make a local impression. The guy who runs it, Matt Sage, is wonderful and could also be worth talking to about venues. A friend of mine plays from time to time at The Phoenix Picture House, upstairs. Not quite the Zodiac but maybe... Anyway, best of luck. Hope to hear you round Oxford sometime soon. And by the way, is there any truth to the Candle rumour you might be doing some shows in the US soon?
